Moorfields eye centre, which was designed by architects Penoyre and Prasad, was praised as a “significant contemporary design”, with its creative use of vertical space and glass to create a sense of space and scale. The award was especially deserved after being nominated for the Prime Minister Better Public Building Award earlier in the year.

The award for the Best Contractor of the Year went to HBG Construction for their work on the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre. The £60m state of the art building, procured through ProCure21, was completed a month ahead of schedule in April 2007. The judges were particularly impressed with the company’s collaborative approach, encouraging team members to air any problems and fully involving clinical staff throughout the project.
